Why You Are Here
Miles to kilometers shows up in three genuinely different situations that each require a slightly different approach to the conversion.
The first is road trip and travel planning. If you are driving in the US or UK and crossing into Canada, Mexico, or Europe, your odometer and road signs will switch from miles to kilometers. A GPS that shows 50 miles remaining suddenly shows 80.5 kilometers after crossing a border. Your fuel gauge reads the same but the distance to the next fuel stop now requires converting to understand. Understanding that 60 miles per hour equals 96.6 kilometers per hour also matters for obeying speed limits in metric countries.
The second is marathon and race training. The marathon distance is officially 42.195 kilometers but most US runners know it as 26.2 miles. Training programs written in miles need to be converted for runners using metric GPS watches or racing on international courses where distance markers are in kilometers. A 20-mile training run is 32.187 kilometers. A half marathon is 13.1 miles which equals 21.082 kilometers.
The third is fuel economy comparison. American vehicles list fuel economy in miles per gallon. European vehicles list it in liters per 100 kilometers. A US buyer comparing a European car's fuel efficiency needs to convert the mileage figures to understand which vehicle is more economical, and that conversion involves both miles to kilometers and gallons to liters simultaneously.
The Conversion Factor and Formula
1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers exactly. This is a legally defined, mathematically precise value. The mile was defined as exactly 1,609.344 meters in 1959 under the International Yard and Pound Agreement. Since 1 kilometer equals exactly 1,000 meters, 1 mile equals exactly 1.609344 kilometers with no rounding required.
Formula: Kilometers = Miles x 1.609344 Example: Convert 26.2 miles to kilometers 26.2 x 1.609344 = 42.165 kilometers // This is the marathon distance // A runner completing 26.2 miles has run 42.165 km // which rounds to the official 42.195 km marathon distance

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Rounding to 1.6 kilometers per mile introduces a 0.58 percent error. For a 100-mile distance that difference is 0.93 kilometers, which is small. For a 500-mile road trip the error grows to 4.67 kilometers, which matters for fuel planning, estimated arrival time calculations, and comparing GPS distances. For race distances where a few meters can affect official timing, always use the full factor of 1.609344.
Miles per hour converts to kilometers per hour using exactly the same factor of 1.609344. A speed limit of 60 mph equals 96.56 km/h, not 100 km/h. Many drivers assume 60 mph is exactly 100 km/h because it is a round number in the metric system, but the precise conversion is 96.56 km/h. Driving at 60 mph in a country with a 90 km/h speed limit means driving at 96.56 km/h which exceeds the limit by 6.56 km/h.
The statute mile of 1.609344 kilometers is the standard land distance unit used in the US and UK. The nautical mile of 1.852 kilometers is used in aviation and maritime navigation. These are two different measurements. A distance given in nautical miles cannot be converted using the 1.609344 factor. If you are working with aviation distances, ship routes, or marine charts, you need a nautical miles converter, not this converter.
