Fuel Economy Context
European vehicles and most international markets measure fuel economy in liters per 100 kilometers. American vehicles measure fuel economy in miles per gallon. Converting between the two requires both a liters-to-gallons conversion and a kilometers-to-miles conversion simultaneously.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
If you are in the UK, Canada, or Australia and convert a liter value using the US gallon factor of 0.264172, your result will be approximately 20 percent too high. A 50-liter tank converted using US gallons gives 13.2 gallons when the correct Imperial answer is 11.0 gallons. Always confirm which gallon system applies to your country and context before converting.
Many quick-reference guides suggest dividing liters by 3.8 to get US gallons. This is a rounded approximation that creates an error of 0.005 gallons per liter. Over a 50-liter tank that is a 0.25-gallon error, which at current fuel prices is a meaningful miscalculation for cost estimation. Always use 0.264172 for multiplication or 3.78541 for division to get precise results.
Car engine size is measured in liters but this has nothing to do with volume conversion. A 2.0-liter engine does not hold 2.0 liters of fuel. Engine displacement in liters refers to the total swept volume of all cylinders. Do not use this converter for engine size comparisons.
