The Conversion Formula
Unlike length and weight conversions, Fahrenheit to Celsius cannot be done by simple multiplication alone. The two scales have different zero points and different degree sizes, so the conversion requires subtraction followed by multiplication.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
The most common error is multiplying the Fahrenheit temperature by 5/9 without first subtracting 32. Multiplying 98.6 by 5/9 gives 54.8 which is completely wrong. The correct answer is 37 Celsius. The subtraction of 32 is the step that accounts for the different zero points of the two scales and cannot be skipped.
The two formulas are not the same operation in reverse. Celsius to Fahrenheit is multiply by 9/5 then add 32. Fahrenheit to Celsius is subtract 32 then multiply by 5/9. Mixing these up produces a result that is nonsensical. If your converted temperature seems unreasonably high or low, check which direction you applied the formula.
A fever threshold in the US is commonly stated as 100.4 Fahrenheit. In metric countries the same threshold is stated as 38 Celsius. These are equivalent. However a person who hears 38 degrees in a metric-country medical context and interprets that as 38 Fahrenheit would think the temperature was just above freezing, not a fever at all. Always verify whether a temperature reference is in Fahrenheit or Celsius before interpreting it medically.
